About us

Hi my name is Linda Hart and I want to tell you a little bit about Country Matters and what else we do...

Country Matters was a gift shop that started out in 1976. Then in 2000 the previous owners to me Pat and Jenny Anderson bought the shop next door and ‘Jenny Plus’ was born. Jenny had brought a new lease of life for bigger girls in the West Country.

In 2003 I heard that they were going to sell due to retirement… August 4th I took over.
I changed “Jenny Plus” back to just Country Matters (It’s easier on the phone) It is hard work but I am fortunate to have a really good team in place. Part-time we have Katherine and Hesther plus an assortment of Shanghaied helpers when needed. It a real boon though that I love to shop, ask my friends.

In sourcing new companies who cater for the Bigger Girl. I found track suits, T-Shirts, Reversible jackets with hoods, Kaftans, half slips but was always being asked if we did larger sizes in the ethnic clothing… I found one wholesaler who did, and it is so pretty and feminine he is now increasing his size range especially for next spring. He had one top and skirt that if he does again next year, I will be 1st in the queue to buy.

We have now increased our sizes range up to a 42, and I am still looking so no one suggest to me Sack Cloth Inc? I was asked by a number of clients if we did underwear? Ooooh I thought pretty, pretty. My 1st hiccup came after I had trained with Silhouette…….. They closed. So I went to the Harrogate Fair and out of approx 180 stalls only about five catered for the bigger girl a couple of them were just too expensive or demanded enormous amounts of money and stock. So I opted for two and then Silhouette came back. After two years of “I don’t think I can do this”, I now just by eye alone if necessary can measure, but I plan on showing you how to do it yourself when I launch the Underwear Section.. so watch this space?
